By Brother Ben Brown of Alpha Zeta, (Kansas State), Senior Research Associate / Extension Agricultural Economist at the University of Missouri

This spring, Brother Jake Pfaff of Theta Chapter (Missouri) embarked on a transformative journey far from the familiar rolling pastures of Missouri or the peach trees of his upbringing in Georgia. From March to August, Jake is studying abroad in Kyoto, Japan, a decision fueled by his lifelong fascination with Japanese culture and a desire to explore East Asia for the first time.

Thanks to the support of the University of Missouri International Center, Mizzou Study Abroad Office, and his dedicated academic advisor, Jake found a program that aligned perfectly with his academic goals and graduation timeline. He is currently enrolled at Doshisha University, a prestigious private institution rooted in Christian and American values.

The main academic building of Doshisha University’s Imadegawa Campus.

At Doshisha, Jake is immersed in a vibrant academic environment where he interacts daily with students from around the world. “Engaging with such a diverse group of peers has really challenged and enhanced my interpersonal communication skills,” Jake shares. “It has pushed me to be more open-minded and intentional in how I express myself.”

Adapting to life in Japan hasn’t been without its challenges, but Jake sees every obstacle as an opportunity for growth. Navigating cultural differences has deepened his appreciation for global perspectives and strengthened his ability to communicate across boundaries — skills that will serve him well in both his personal and professional life.

“Studying abroad is so much more than just seeing the sights,” Jake reflects. “It’s about living within a new culture and gaining a deeper understanding of the world. You can visit a country as a tourist, but to truly understand it, you must live it.”

Jake’s experiences are a testament to the value of stepping outside your comfort zone and embracing the unknown. His time in Kyoto not only enriches his own life but also reflects the spirit of curiosity, leadership and growth that defines Alpha Gamma Rho.
